From ancient civilizations to modern markets, hemp has played a pivotal role in society, offering solutions for textiles, nutrition, and even environmental challenges. Today, we dive into the essence of hemp, debunk myths, and explore its myriad of uses and promising future.
Hemp's journey begins thousands of years ago, woven into the fabric of numerous cultures across the globe. This resilient plant was cultivated for its strong fibers, used in making ropes, sails, and clothing. Despite its widespread utility, hemp faced legal and perceptual challenges, especially in the 20th century, when it was lumped together with its psychoactive cousin, marijuana. However, recent years have seen a resurgence in hemp's popularity, thanks to legislative changes and a growing awareness of its environmental and health benefits.
At its core, hemp is distinct from marijuana, primarily due to its low THC content—the compound responsible for marijuana's psychoactive effects. Hemp is legally defined as containing 0.3% THC or less, making it non-intoxicating and suitable for a wide range of uses. Its environmental credentials are equally impressive; hemp requires minimal water, forgoes pesticides, and enriches the soil it's grown in, making it a champion of sustainable agriculture. Nutritionally, hemp seeds are a powerhouse, packed with protein, essential fatty acids, and minerals.
Hemp's utility spans far beyond its historical applications. Today, it's a key ingredient in creating eco-friendly textiles, biodegradable plastics, and even sustainable building materials like hempcrete. The innovation doesn't stop there; hemp is also making waves in the wellness industry, with hemp-derived CBD products offering relief and support for a myriad of health concerns, from anxiety to inflammation.
As we look to the future, the potential for hemp seems boundless. Ongoing research and technological advancements are paving the way for even more innovative uses, from hemp-based biofuels to advancements in food security. The conversation around hemp is evolving, with a growing recognition of its ability to contribute to a more sustainable and health-conscious world.
This National Hemp Day, we invite you to explore the world of hemp. Whether it's trying a hemp-based product, learning more about its environmental benefits, or simply sparking a conversation about its potential, there are countless ways to celebrate and support this remarkable plant.
National Hemp Day is not just a celebration of hemp's past but a hopeful glance towards its future. As we continue to uncover the vast potential of this plant, we're reminded of the importance of sustainable, natural solutions in our lives. Thank you for joining us in recognizing the incredible journey of hemp, a true testament to nature's ingenuity and resilience.

As the demand for CBD products continues to rise, it is important to consider the sustainability of its production. CBD, or cannabidiol, is a compound derived from the cannabis plant that has gained popularity for its potential health benefits. However, the cultivation and extraction of CBD can have significant environmental impacts. In this blog post, we will explore the importance of sustainability in CBD production and discuss some key practices that can help minimize its environmental footprint.
Sustainability is crucial in CBD production to ensure the long-term viability of the industry and minimize its impact on the environment. The cultivation of cannabis plants requires significant amounts of water, energy, and land. Additionally, the extraction process often involves the use of solvents and chemicals that can be harmful if not properly managed. By adopting sustainable practices, CBD producers can reduce their carbon footprint, conserve resources, and protect ecosystems.
1. Organic farming: Choosing organic cultivation methods eliminates the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides, which can contaminate soil and water sources. Organic farming promotes biodiversity and helps maintain the health of ecosystems.
2. Water conservation: Implementing efficient irrigation systems and water management strategies can significantly reduce water usage in CBD cultivation. Collecting rainwater and using it for irrigation is another sustainable practice that can help conserve water resources.
3. Energy efficiency: CBD producers can reduce their energy consumption by utilizing energy-efficient lighting systems, optimizing temperature and humidity controls, and investing in renewable energy sources such as solar power.
4. Waste management: Proper waste management is essential in CBD production. Recycling and reusing materials, such as plant waste and packaging, can help minimize waste. Additionally, implementing composting systems can turn organic waste into nutrient-rich soil amendments.
5. Responsible extraction methods: CBD extraction often involves the use of solvents such as ethanol or CO2. It is important for producers to use closed-loop extraction systems and proper ventilation to minimize the release of harmful chemicals into the environment.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive disorder where dementia symptoms worsen over the years. It begins with mild memory loss but can rapidly increase into individuals not being able to respond to their environment or other outside factors. Unfortunately, there is no cure to this day, and there is a great need for more effective AD therapies.
CBD has shown neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties (in vitro – meaning in a test tube or culture dish) – which makes it a great substance to study as a potential treatment for AD. Studies suggest that CBD can reduce reactive gliosis (a response in neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory diseases). In addition, CBD has shown to promote neurogenesis (the formation of new brain cells, or neurons). In rodents, CBD even reversed the development of cognitive deficits!
A wonderful story is illustrated in the case of an 81-year-old man who suffered from dementia and had difficulty keeping his eyes open and maintaining eye contact. He also suffered from an inability to speak and communicate. He was treated with CBD oil, beginning with 3 daily drops for a week and then increased to 4 daily drops. After a few days, he was able to say a few words and his responsiveness improved. After a month, he continued to say a few words, he regained his ability to maintain eye contact for more than a few seconds, and his stiffened muscles began to relax.
Of course, this is one case and there is no conclusive evidence yet of CBD being an official AD treatment, but it opens possibilities where modern medicine believed to have fallen short.
Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is another neurological disorder, which is characterized by shaking, stiffness, difficulty with walking and coordination. Like AD, it is a progressive disease, which means it worsens over time. Other mental and behavioral symptoms are often reported, such as sleeping issues, depression, memory difficulties, and fatigue. It affects 50% more men than women, but both are susceptible to it.
CBD has been recognized as a potential treatment to Parkinson’s similarly to Alzheimer’s because of CBD’s neuroprotective and antioxidant properties. According to the American Parkinson’s Disease Association, “Inflammation in the nervous system has been linked to neurodegeneration,” which makes CBD’s neuroprotective characteristics an exciting -but again, not conclusive- opportunity for patients with PD.
There are a few studies that have been conducted regarding CBD and PD, with the following results:
Epidiolex® is the only CBD formulation approved by the FDA for childhood epilepsy, and recently it was trialed in 10 people with PD. Results showed improvement in motor scores, sleep, and emotional dysregulation. Many patients with PD are already using CBD because they claim it helps with their symptoms and quality of life, but until we have more evidence, we won’t exactly know how CBD helps specific symptoms.
Conclusion
To summarize, CBD shows great potential as a neuroprotective agent as it has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It has shown to help patients of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, although there is no conclusive evidence yet. In addition, CBD may help overall brain function by promoting the formation of new brain cells. Students claim that CBD helps them focus while studying, and it is also being researched as a potential therapy for depression. While we do not know exactly how CBD interacts with our brain function, the results so far are promising and worthy of more research.

]]>The 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp for industrial and commercial use, as well as to consume in all 50 states. This paved the way for different CBD products, but also for regulatory questions.
We have seen in previous blog posts that CBD stands for Cannabidiol, and it is a component present in hemp that may relieve pain and anxiety without getting you high. There are different kinds of CBD products, such as: oil, gummies, tablets, smokable products, and more.
However, hemp products that are considered “full spectrum” (like most of our products), contain trace amounts of THC (the legal amount of 0.3%THC). THC stands for Tetrahydrocannabinol, and it is the component in marijuana that makes consumers feel high. While the THC amount in hemp products is not enough to get you high or make you feel intoxicated, it could still be detected in a urine drug test.
In some cases, a single vaping incident can be enough to trigger a positive drug reading for marijuana.
One reason many customers choose full spectrum hemp products is what is known as the “entourage effect,” in which the different cannabinoids present in the hemp plant will produce a more encapsulating benefit in your body than one cannabinoid alone.
Nonetheless, even single cannabinoid products (like THC-free or CBD isolate products) are good if sourced from a reputable farm.
Important: Your CBD oil can come from either the hemp or the marijuana (cannabis) plant. In North Carolina, only hemp-derived CBD oil is legal.
To further prevent a positive reading, make sure to choose a hemp-derived CBD oil like ours!
The article “Pure CBD Won’t Make You Fail a Drug Test, But…” by Norton stresses the need for more accurate testing to differentiate between the two cannabinoids. Some prototypes are already being worked on.
This can prevent false-positives or unnecessary repercussions for people who use and need CBD to treat certain ailments. Accurate drug testing is also important in the criminal justice and addiction treatment areas.
If you have recently used full spectrum hemp oil (CBD oil), and you are trying to get a new job, you may need to communicate this to your potential employer. Many people use CBD oil or tablets nowadays, so transparency is your best friend. They may be understanding unless they require a strict zero THC policy.
We hope you have a better understanding now of how CBD can affect drug testing so you can make the best decisions for yourself.
We are here to answer any and all of your questions.

]]>Cannabidiol (CBD) has become known for its calming and pain-relieving effects, especially among people with chronic pain conditions. Additionally, it is increasing in popularity between another subset of the population: athletes and gym fans. In fact, many people who love exercising have adopted CBD into their pre and post workout routines.
In our previous blog post, we wrote about CBD’s components, benefits, and uses. Since it has shown to relieve inflammation, this cannabinoid paves an interesting route for soothing sore muscles and inflammation caused by running, HIIT, and cross-fit. Read on to learn more about how CBD can enhance your workout routine and help you accomplish your wellness goals.
Athletes are always ready –and they know how to stay healthy. Most of their wellness habits include proper sleep, watching their diet, supporting their immune system, and strengthening their physical bodies. As of a few years ago, not many had heard of CBD in the sports arena. However, today, many athletes use CBD in their daily lives.
The way most athletes and gym-goers use CBD is with topical products, like CBD lotions, salves, and balms. These can be applied directly onto the affected area after exercising. Most people begin to feel relief in a short amount of time.
Fun Fact
Did you know that we get the famous “Runner’s High” not simply from endorphins, but from our endocannabinoids being stimulated while we exercise?
Tara Laferrara, former sprinter and NASM certified personal trainer, spoke with Men’s Health regarding CBD. She was first introduced to it after Colorado legalized cannabis in 2014. CBD helped her manage the joint inflammation she would get after heavy lifting sessions.
One of our very own Appalachian Growers customers, owner of wellness store Mountain Valley Health Foods, sent us this review of our recently-launched now best-seller Appalachian Growers CBD Sports Roll On:
I wanted to tell you how absolutely amazing the 2400mg CBD Roll-On is! I get nerve pain down my arm occasionally from whiplash and during this move I've had to lift what seems like hundreds of totes/boxes! The nerve pain was almost unbearable yesterday...fingers were going numb. I put the roll-on on, and I started to feel improvement within 10 minutes. Within half an hour, the pain was probably 90% gone! I've kept applying it and now I barely notice the pain was there...AND I slept like a baby! Thanks so much for offering such an amazing product!
The article “Cannabidiol and Sports Performance” from Sports Medicine-Open, states that CBD has shown to have anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and analgesic effects in animal models. While there aren’t specific studies on CBD and athletes just yet, it is assumed that because of CBD’s properties, it can also promote muscle recovery.
There are many studies with evidence to show the potential benefits of CBD regarding chronic pain, acute pain, and inflammation. In a 2020 study in New Zealand, 400 cancer patients reported improvements in their quality of life and pain management after incorporating CBD into their treatment. A different study in Frontiers in Pharmacology suggests that CBD can provide therapeutic benefit for those with chronic pain conditions.
In another post, we spotlighted our Full Spectrum CBD Salve and our Full Spectrum CBD Lotion. Our customers have been using these to nourish their bodies after exercising for months.
Here we go…
Feel the relief of our 2400mg CBD infused Sport Roll-On. Whether you are looking to soothe your muscles after jogging or simply wishing to relieve stress from the day, the blend of our organic, full spectrum CBD and powerful essential oils will nourish and alleviate your skin. This non-oily solution is perfect even if you are sweaty.
Conclusion
The demand for CBD is increasing among athletes and gym-goers. CBD has shown to relieve pain and soothe inflammation, which accelerates muscle recovery. While CBD is not a magic cure to our health issues (as stated in misleading advertisements), it is a great, natural remedy. Along with regular exercise and a well-balanced diet, we recommend adding CBD to a set of healthy habits that boost your wellbeing.
Did you know that one of our founders, Lori, was a personal trainer for years? She loves using our products to control pain and inflammation from years of gymnastics, softball, running, and weight training.

According to the Arthritis Foundation, there are more than 100 different kinds of arthritis, and more than 50 million Americans struggle with arthritis every day. Arthritis medication can alleviate symptoms, but usually at the expense of living with different gastrointestinal problems or other side effects.
If you suffer from arthritic pain, you may have heard of Cannabidiol (CBD) as a possible treatment. In our previous post, we talk about all things CBD: what it is, how it interacts with your receptors to help your body, and how to distinguish between good CBD products and snake oil.
In this post, we will take a closer look at why both topical CBD products and ingestible CBD products may show great potential in helping relieve arthritis symptoms and achieve a better quality of life.
CBD has exponentially increased in popularity in the United States, also among people with chronic pain conditions like arthritis. According to the Arthritis Foundation, 79% of individuals with arthritis have used CBD in the past, are currently using it, or are considering starting it.
There are several clinical studies that show promising (yet not definite) results regarding the use of CBD for arthritis pain management.
CBD has shown promise in reducing knee pain due to osteoarthritis, where in a clinical study, patients reported “significant reduction” in their pain.
The following studies have found CBD to help ease the pain of individuals with arthritis:
The article “A Balanced Approach for Cananbidiol Use in Chronic Pain” also states that CBD can relieve chronic pain in certain conditions and improve quality of life.
Other studies like:
Have reported that CBD has helped relieve the pain of patients with the following conditions: multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, Crohn’s disease, fibromyalgia, and overall chronic pain management.
Topical CBD nourishes your skin. In addition, CBD acts as an anti-inflammatory agent that can help reduce pain. Topical CBD products usually provide the most immediate pain relief if your pain is localized.
Studies show that cannabidiol can help repair, replenish, and promote new skin. CBD can slow the progression, for example, of osteoarthritis by decreasing inflammation. CBD, when applied on the skin, has also shown to reduce mechanosensitivty of the joint receptors and joint swelling.
Our top 2 recommendations for treating chronic pain topically are:
A customer and staff favorite, our hemp salve soothes your sore muscles and supports your joints. Besides CBD, it also includes arnica, which will help especially with inflammation. If you need a salve and you’re always on the run, we also have a smaller 1oz CBD salve size.
Our CBD lotion is another customer favorite in terms of pain relief. Try it for yourself and let us know what you think! Down below you can read what one of our runner customers said about our CBD lotion.
Harvard Health Publishing recommends buying a CBD product that has been “tested for purity, potency, and safety,” as well as those with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certification. We are GMP certified (make sure to check out our other certifications like USDA Organic and GAP in this post), and we also provide all COAs to prove that our product is clean and safe.
The goal of Appalachian Growers is to help people feel better and achieve a higher quality of life through natural and organic CBD products. We were so pleased to recently receive the following review from a customer who is a marathon-runner regarding our CBD lotion and his knee pain:
The lotion has virtually eliminated any knee pain from long runs (like marathons). I just ordered two of the gift sets – one for me, one for a running buddy. I’m a believer! I do about 8 full 26.2 marathons a year – and at age 54, my knees do start to feel it. But they are 100% better. Of course, I use it daily.
According to the article CBD Oil and Pain:
Ingestible CBD: stimulates your endocannabinoid system, which partly dictates how pain is processed and experienced. CBD has also shown to inhibit glutamate levels in the brain and spinal cord of mice, which is associated with pain sensation and transmission. In humans, CBD has been shown to enhance anandamide signaling, which is linked to feelings of well-being and happiness.
Make sure to check out these 2 ingestible CBD Appalachian Growers products:
The instant release allows for immediate absorption in the gut for quick relief. The concentration is 50mg of CBD per tablet, but each tablet contains a breaker bar if you only want half a dose. The tablet is easy to carry and it is also a great option if you are on the go.
If you have not given our 1500mg oil a try, today may be your day. This organic CBD oil has been a customer favorite from day #1, and it will always be an Appalachian Growers classic! Check out the review from a customer down below about our CBD oil.
Another customer sent us the following review a few months after starting to take our full spectrum CBD oil:
I discovered your product when I visited the hemp convention in Atlanta, GA looking for an organic full spectrum CBD oil. Just wanted to take a second to say I really love your product and have been using it ever since. Super stoked for you guys getting USDA certified. Thanks again for your passion and an awesome product!
Suffering from conditions like arthritis can be debilitating but remember that you are not alone. CBD can be a great therapy option for individuals with joint-pain and swelling. If you suffer from medical conditions, however, we always recommend you speak with your doctor before starting to take CBD products.
Our goal is to help our customers find relief and a happier, better quality of life through incorporating natural, organic, and local CBD products into their wellness routine.
Our team at Appalachian Growers is always here to answer your questions!
Each cannabinoid is different, and it interacts uniquely with the receptors in your endocannabinoid system. Although in this post we will briefly touch on the endocannabinoid system, make sure to check out the article written by Dr. Felecia L. Dawson that we shared on our blog to learn in-depth about this wonderful cell-signaling system!
Research on the plant has come a long way in a short time, thanks hugely in part to the 2018 Farm Bill, which allowed for the industrial hemp industry to take off.
In this post, we will focus on:
What is CBD and how does it work?
CBD and the endocannabinoid system
Proven benefits of CBD
Choosing the best CBD product for you and product recommendations
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant (the specific variety is called Sativa L., which can be both hemp and marijuana). A cannabinoid is a chemical compound produced by the plant that has specific properties and benefits.
CBD became widely popular in the last couple of years. Before that, not many people knew what a cannabinoid was. “Weed” was just something some people smoked back then to get high—and it had been illegal for a long time. Fun fact: the intoxicating chemical that makes people high is called Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and it is the most common cannabinoid in marijuana.
Since about 2018, however, you may remember that CBD started to pop up everywhere, advertised as the “wonder,” “miracle,” or “magic” cure for everything. According to these claims, CBD could heal you from stress to migraines to cancer.
While this put CBD on the map and many people began to feel relief by using organic CBD products, it also led to many less-than-reputable operations to make false and misleading claims about the products they were selling and the benefits of CBD overall.
Fortunately, many companies are very transparent about their farming and distribution/packaging practices. They prove it through record-keeping, third party certifications, and genuinely clean and impressive operations and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Nonetheless, since federal and state regulation is still being designed and implemented, there are still CBD operations that do not comply and who do not have the consumers’ best interest in mind.
To illustrate, at Appalachian Growers we have achieved four different third-party certifications, which show that our practices, crop, and products adhere to these high standards of quality, safety, and transparency.
Our hemp certifications are:
USDA Organic
Cruelty-Free
Very much like our nervous, skeletal, and respiratory systems, we all have an endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system was not very researched until the 90s, and now we are beginning to understand how powerful it is.
The endocannabinoid system performs important roles, such as keeping our body in balance (also known as homeostasis). In addition, it has been linked (at least partially) to the following functions:
Appetite and digestion
Chronic pain and inflammation
Sleep and mood
Motor control and memory
Skin and nerve functions
We all have CB1 and CB2 receptors which are part of our endocannabinoid system. Although CBD does not actually bind to these receptors, it “activates” them and affects them indirectly. This process is how we can begin to feel the benefits of CBD. Nonetheless, every person’s endocannabinoid system is different, based on factors such as:
Genetics
Gender
Age
Habits
Learning about the endocannabinoid system is useful to understand why CBD affects us all differently. Some people feel the desired benefits (such as pain relief or relaxation) shortly after beginning to take CBD oil, tablets, drops, or whichever product they choose. Other people may need to set a daily CBD schedule for one or two weeks to begin to feel a difference. Patience is key when introducing a new substance to the body. It is also paramount to know how your hemp is grown, processed, and extracted –the higher the quality, the better it will be for you.
Is there evidence to back up the CBD health benefits? Are there proven benefits to CBD? These are some of the most frequently asked questions today. Luckily, the answer is yes!
According to Harvard Health Publishing, the strongest scientific evidence for the efficacy of CBD is in treating childhood epilepsy, like the Dravet and Lennox-Gastaut (LGS) syndromes. While these children do not usually respond to medication, different studies cite that CBD reduced their numbers of seizures or even stopped them.
There are several studies that cite the proven and potential benefits that CBD offers in treating chronic pain and sleep management:
In a 2019 study, patients with fibromyalgia that used CBD experienced significantly less pain that those who were given a placebo.
Another promising study showed that CBD could prevent inflammatory and neuropathic pain.
The article “Cannabinoids in the Management of Difficult to Treat Pain” in the Journal of Therapeutics and Risk Management states that in 2005, a cannabis-derived oromucosal spray (containing equal parts THC and CBD) was approved to treat central neuropathic pain in multiple sclerosis, and in 2007 for cancer pain.
In a 2020 study, patients reported that CBD helped them to fall asleep and stay asleep.
The article “Cannabidiol as a Potential Treatment for Anxiety Disorders” by the journal Neurotherapeutics states that there is some clinical evidence to suggest that CBD can help with a myriad of anxiety and stress disorders, including PTSD, OCD, and general anxiety.
Now you have an in-depth understanding of CBD, what it is, how it works, and what to look for as far as consumer safety goes. In this post, we will highlight 3 of our best-selling, organic, local CBD products so you can choose the item that best suits your needs.
3000mg Full Spectrum Cannabinoid Tincture: CBD oil is one of our consumer favorites. If you have never tried CBD before (or even if you have), we are pleased to recommend our 3000mg oil. This is our highest concentration of full spectrum hemp oil, which means that you can start with a low dose and still receive the synergistic effects of different cannabinoids.
How much you need to take will depend on your lifestyle and genetics, and you may need a higher dose at night than in the morning. Our 30ml bottle is designed to take a dropper a day for 30 days, but some people receive benefits with only half of a 3000mg dropper. We cannot legally suggest a specific dose for our customers, but we do suggest that you experiment with a few products until you find the one that you like best.
If you already take (or have taken) CBD oil, try the 3000mg concentration and let us know how it works for you!
750mg Full Spectrum Hemp Drink Drops: Our CBD drink drops are perfect for putting in your morning coffee, tea, or water so you can go out and seize the day (customers have even reported that putting a couple of CBD drops in their coffee helps to soothe those caffeine jitters!)
We love the drink drops because the water form allows for absorption without having to be digested first. Plus, the drink drops are perfect for an “on-the-go” solution that you can throw in your purse, gym bag, or briefcase.
Try our CBD drink drops today! If you cannot take full spectrum hemp products due to your work or other reasons, we also offer completely THC-free CBD drink drops. THC-free means that only THC is removed, but the rest of the cannabinoids are there.
50mg Full Spectrum Hemp Instant Release Tablets: One of our recently launched products, our Instant Release CBD tablets will become one of your favorites!
The instant release allows for immediate absorption in the gut for quick relief. The concentration is 50mg of CBD per tablet, but each tablet contains a breaker bar if you only want half a dose. The tablet is easy to carry and it is also a great option if you are on the go.
We also offer instant release tablets that contain a combination of CBD/CBG. CBG stands for Cannabigerol, and it is a cannabinoid that is currently being studied for its properties in helping with digestion and other stomach conditions. Although both tablets provide a unique set of benefits, taking the CBD/CBG tablets together will have more powerful anti-inflammatory effects in your body.
Get now your CBD Instant Release Tablets or give our combination of CBD/CBG Instant Release Tablets a try!
Although now we know more about the cannabis plant than we ever have before, we are still discovering new benefits, applications, and potential treatment routes. Remember that since there is so much information and different products out there that are still unregulated or lowly regulated, it is crucial for the consumer to become educated on finding trustworthy, quality CBD products.
At Appalachian Growers, consumer safety, proven by our farm and packaging certifications, is always at the forefront of our minds. In fact, seeing the benefits that CBD had in direct family members (and their increased quality of life), is the drive and inspiration that created Appalachian Growers in the first place!
Remember that CBD affects everyone differently. It is very possible that you will also experience the benefits of CBD that you find online or that a friend might tell you about, but in the end it depends on a combination of genetics and lifestyle.
Test different quality products and find the right one for you!

Here at Appalachian Growers we are always wanting to educate people on CBD and the benefits people can see from it! We came across this great article by Dr. Felecia L. Dawson and she does a excellent job of breaking down the importance of CBD and the Endocannabinoid System as a whole.
We are being inundated with all things CBD!
CBD, or cannabidiol, an ingredient derived from hemp and cannabis, is coming at us in many forms—from oil to infused clothing and linens. While CBD may be relatively new to the market, our bodies know the compound well because CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is now considered to be one of the most important systems in the body for maintaining our health.
Discovered as recently as the 1990s by researchers who were trying to understand how cannabis affects us, the ECS is believed to be critical in helping the body maintain balance and homeostasis. It is considered a “master regulator” and performs different tasks involving the nervous, immune, hormonal and other systems that contribute to our ability to think, move and digest, fight off infections and cancer and even experience pleasure.
The ECS includes three key components: receptors, which, when stimulated, help to promote homeostasis in the body, reduce pain and curb inflammation; endocannabinoids, which activate the receptors; and enzymes that break down the endocannabinoids after they are used.
In 1998, Professor Vincenzo Di Marzo, a research director at the Institute of Biomolecular Chemistry of the National Research Council (ICB-CNR) in Naples, Italy, summarized the endocannabinoid system as one that helps us “relax, eat, sleep, forget and protect.” Six years later, in 2004, Dr. Ethan Russo hypothesized that many diseases—including chronic fatigue syndrome, lupus, fibromyalgia, cancer, endometriosis, autoimmune disorders, Alzheimer’s, migraines, anxiety, depression and even PTSD—are due to inadequate ECS function, for which he coined the term “Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency Syndrome.” Research now supports his theory.
Typically, when someone is ill with any of these diseases, at least one component of the ECS is present in abnormal amounts. For example, research has shown that people who have migraines or PTSD have fewer endocannabinoids in their systems than those who do not suffer from those conditions. Rebalancing the ECS with the help of cannabinoids like CBD can reduce pain and inflammation.
Consume at least 1000mg of Omega-3 fatty acids every day.
Eat at least five servings of vegetables with spices.
Sleep seven to nine hours per night.
We are thrilled to announce that our farm is now Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certified! This means that our entire operation (fields and harvest building), logs, and Standard Operating Procedures have been thoroughly reviewed by an impartial third-party, approved by our certifier, Ceres Certifications International, and were found to be in conformance with the Primus Standard GAP guidelines for agriculture. It is essential to be informed about where our food and other ingestible products come from, and we at Appalachian Growers believe that everyone deserves to have the peace of mind knowing their hemp was farmed with the highest quality in mind.
What is GAP Certification?
GAP is an acronym that stands for Good Agricultural Practices. GAP certification is a voluntary audit program designed for the fruit and vegetable production industry to verify that the crop in question is grown, packed, handled, and stored as safely as possible. These audits check for adherence to the FDA’s production guide as well as industry standard food safety practices.
In the hemp industry, importance is typically placed on test results such as:
While these tests are an important piece to knowing the quality of your hemp, this testing profile does not cover the farming practices involved in creating the product that you have chosen to ingest.
So what does GAP Certification cover?
Good Agricultural Practices certification encompasses aspects of the farming process such as land location, farm traceability and security, and employee hygiene and sanitation practices. Standard Operating Procedures are written and put into place to ensure that staff are following industry standard best farming practices on site, and logs are reviewed by a neutral third-party to verify that these practices are followed correctly. From the mixing and applying of our organic fertilizers and pest control products, to the hygiene of the employee that hand-bucks our harvest, these practices are up to the GAP standards that the USDA and FDA have established.
Good Agricultural Practices are also a vital component of sustainable agriculture. Appalachian Growers continually seeks to set industry-wide standards of food safety, quality assurance, transparency, and compliance. With our GAP certification, we want to provide:
Peace of mind for our customers
Accountability to the public
A clean and safe product
We value every person that chooses to select our products, and we believe that our customers deserve to be assured that we refuse to compromise our commitment to quality in bringing them the very best hemp selection possible.

CBD is currently being studied as a natural anti-inflammatory agent for our biggest external organ, as well as for homeostasis and other functions. Cannabidiol promotes melanogenesis (Chemico-Biological Interactions), which is key in protecting the skin against external stressors and UV radiation. CBD is also currently being studied for its potential against skin diseases like atopic dermatitis, eczema, and keratin disorders, given that results show that CBD helps repair, replenish, and promote new skin.
Some of the most commonly experienced therapeutic benefits of customers who use topical CBD (According to the Epidermal Endocannabinoid System, PhytoTherapy Research)
include:
Patients with Epidermolysis Bullosa Simplex (EBS) have participated in studies which incorporate a cannabidiol treatment with very promising results, thus paving the way for more trials and the future of medical skin care using CBD (Science Direct).
